local mechanic and race car driver is suffering a major setback after a fire on Saturday afternoon.
Escambia County Fire Rescue got a call just before 5 p.m. of a garage on fire on the 3500 block of Wiggins Lane.
When they arrived, the structure was engulfed in flames, according to officials.
David Uebelsteadt says he had shut everything down and locked up his autobody garage where he was working before tragedy struck.
“Next thing I know, people are banging on my door, ‘Hey man, your shop’s on fire,'” Uebelsteadt said. “All you do is think about everything you’re losing. Luckily, nobody was hurt. “My home and my sister’s home next door here didn’t get anything like that. Mainly, it was just sentimental stuff, things that can be replaced
Uebelsteadt says the shop is a total loss, and all of his equipment will need to be replaced.
He also lost an antique wooden boat that belonged to his father.
