One man is dead and another is in critical condition after the go-kart they were riding in was struck by a car, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting the crash on Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road at around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday.
A 33-year-old man was driving a homemade go-kart with a 38-year-old man in the passenger seat.
The go-kart slowed down to turn into a driveway and was struck from behind by a Hyundai Elantra being driven by a 21-year-old Lakeland woman, ejecting the driver and partially ejecting the passenger.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. The passenger died from his injuries.
The Hyundai driver was uninjured and remained at the scene. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
