‘He was my best friend’: Child dies in early morning fire in Altamonte Springs

A child was killed in an early morning apartment fire in Altamonte Springs.

The fire broke out in a building at the Goldelm at Charter Pointe Apartments close to 1:30 a.m.

The Seminole County Fire Department said the child was in a second-story unit, and other people who were inside at the time were able to escape. The child’s exact age has not been released, but officials said the child was pre-teenage years.

A neighbor captured the intensity of the fire on a smartphone as the flames stretched into the night sky. A doorbell camera showed firefighters doing all they could to get people evacuated to safety.

“I’m a night owl, so I stay up late, I heard screaming outside, and then I heard an explosion, like a loud bang,” Uriah Frisby said.

He immediately went to get his daughter.

“My first instinct was to grab my daughter, so I went in her room and grabbed her, and I left the house, I didn’t grab anything else, I just left,” Frisby said.

“Very heavy fire conditions when our crews first arrived. They pulled the biggest hose line we have, put the most water they could, just the volume of the fire, the progression was the hardest thing to mitigate,” Chief Matt Kinley said.

The chief says his crews arrived within three minutes after the call and had water on the flames two minutes later.

Despite those efforts, the young boy did not survive.

“Ultimately, we did have one fire fatality, I just want to say our crews did an exceptional job on this alarm, unfortunately you can do everything perfect sometimes and tragedies still happen,” Kinley said.

Late in the day, a family stopped by the fire scene to leave flowers and balloons.

“This is the first time I’ve lost a best friend,” Jadan Joseph, a friend of the victim, said.

The fifth grader met the boy who died on his first day of school and felt he had to pay tribute.

“Cause he was my best friend and I didn’t want to leave him on a special day,” Joseph said.
