A child was hit by a vehicle near Punta Gorda Middle School on Tuesday morning.
According to Charlotte County Public Safety, a student was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Carmalita Street and Education Avenue, just in front of Punta Gorda Middle School.
The Punta Gorda Police Department said officers responded to the crash at approximately 6:52 a.m., and it involved a “high school-aged student” riding a bicycle. According to police, the student’s condition is stable.
A student biking to school in Punta Gorda was hospitalized Thursday morning after being hit by a truck, according to police.
E, who witnessed the aftermath, described the scene.
“When I came up to the school to turn left into the parent pick-up line and their parking lot, there was a larger pickup truck, darker color. It was either dark blue or black, and the bike was wedged underneath the bumper,” EE said.
This incident follows another case last month when a child riding a scooter to Port Charlotte Middle School was hit by a truck. Ring camera footage captured the moments leading up to that collision.
Officials from Charlotte County Public Schools emphasized the shared responsibility of the community to ensure student safety.
“It’s unfortunate that our students are coming to school in the early morning hours and in the afternoon, and it’s all of our, it’s our community’s responsibility to make sure that these kids are getting to and from school safely. Whether they’re walking or biking and driving in the vehicles,” said Claudette S, a representative of Charlotte County Public Schools.
S also highlighted the importance of teaching children road safety.
“And for students to be aware of the laws, right. The following the safety rules, wearing a helmet, using the crosswalks, making sure that they’re visible,” S said.
Authorities are still working to determine the student’s condition.
Punta Gorda police officers are investigating the crash. Carmalita Street and Education Avenue have since reopened.
Gulf Coast News has reached out to the Punta Gorda Police Department to find out whether anyone has been arrested.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
