A Hillsborough County deputy’s quick thinking helped save a 70-year-old woman’s life after he pulled her from a crash a few moments before the vehicle burst into flames Monday.
Deputies were dispatched to Gunn Highway near Copeland Road around noon on Feb. 26 for reports of a crash. While on the scene, authorities found the woman had crashed through a fence and into a heavily wooded area.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office released bodycam footage showing Deputy Bellamy’s live-saving rescue.
“Can you move? You don’t have to move yet. Is your neck or anything hurt?” the deputy asked the woman.
The woman put her hand to her chest before the deputy advised her to safely exit her car as it was on fire.
“Alright, let’s get you out the car because it’s on fire. Let me get you out the car,” the deputy said.
The deputy and woman were able to safely move away from the vehicle. The footage later shows large smoke plumes coming from where the crash site.
According to HCSO, the woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she has since recovered.
“Deputy Bellamy’s swift and selfless response undoubtedly saved a life in a critical moment,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “His courage and quick thinking exemplify our deputies’ dedication to serving and protecting our community.”
