A suspect is in custody after intentionally hitting a Hillsborough County deputy’s patrol vehicle with his car while trying to avoid an arrest, according to officials.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were responding to an RV park off of Williams Road in Tampa to find a suspect involved in an aggravated battery.

Timeline:

While at the scene, investigators say the suspect, identified by deputies as 27-year-old LW, got in a vehicle with his mother, 62-year-old MW.

That’s when he rammed into another person’s vehicle and then intentionally hit the patrol car of Deputy Stevie Hackett to avoid getting arrested. She was inside her patrol car with an HCSO civilian employee, who was riding along with her, when the suspect hit it.

The suspect ran off after the crash, and HCSO said though Hackett was injured, she ran after the suspect and was able to arrest him shortly after. Hackett and the HCSO employee were both taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in stable condition, according to officials.

“I am incredibly proud of the determination and courage displayed by our deputy during this dangerous situation,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Despite being intentionally targeted, she remained focused and ensured that this dangerous criminal was arrested, protecting our community from further harm.”

What they’re saying:

MA, who was in the area when the incident happened, said it was a quiet and normal day for im and his dog, “Princess,” until 1 p.m. when he heard the booming sound of a crash.

“The guy is running, and he gets across the street, and she pulled the gun out, and she got blood running down her cheek. And I’m like, I’m holding on to Princess. And it’s just so scary,” said A.
