Homestead woman accused of hitting 6-year-old daughter in face with belt

A 31-year-old woman was arrested Thursday by Homestead police on an aggravated child abuse charge.

According to an arrest report, a Homestead police detective was called to a school Wednesday and met with an officer who explained that a 6-year-old girl was in the office with facial injuries.

The name of the school was redacted from the report obtained by Local 10 News.

Police said the girl told her teacher that her mother, AM L, had struck her with a belt.

According to the report, the detective then spoke with the child, who said the incident happened Tuesday, and that her mother had struck her with the belt on her face, ear and shoulder.

Police said the victim had bruising to her face, left ear and upper left shoulder/back area.

According to the arrest report, the girl’s older sister confirmed to police that her younger sister had been struck with a belt by their mother.

L was taken into custody a day after police spoke with the child. She faces one count of aggravated child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.

As of Friday afternoon, she was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond.

The report did not disclose who is currently caring for her children.
