Hurricane Helene blows roof off Apopka home

The roof of a home in Apopka was torn off Thursday evening as heavy winds blew through the area, just hours ahead of Hurricane Helene’s landfall in Florida.

News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts visited the home shortly afterward, discovering that wind had taken the roof off the mobile home.

“(The residents) told me they felt like it was a ‘microburst’ that came up,” Roberts explained.

Debris from the roof littered the surrounding property, falling atop a nearby car.

“This just shows you how powerful the wind is getting, and this is before landfall,” Roberts added.

The homeowner told News 6 that they called their insurance company to report the issue and picked up some of the debris to keep it from flying around.

Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 storm late Thursday night, though its outer bands brought torrential downpours and heavy winds into Central Florida.

As a result, all of Central Florida is under a tornado watch until Friday morning.
