A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was injured Monday during a traffic stop in Homestead, after a suspect allegedly reversed his vehicle into the officer while attempting to evade arrest.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the driver — identified as HIG, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala — struck the officer in the leg, nearly crushing him. G then reportedly crashed into multiple ICE vehicles before fleeing into oncoming traffic and colliding with a utility van. He and three other undocumented migrants exited the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.
ICE officers rendered aid at the scene and detained all four people, who were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. DHS said they have since been discharged and are now in ICE custody, pending removal proceedings.
The suspects include:
- HIG, who entered the U.S. illegally near Eagle Pass, Texas, in March 2022
- RSG, previously removed in 2007, now reentered illegally
- MGH, entered illegally in 2018
- JP M, entry date and location unknown
The injured officer is in stable condition. DHS officials condemned what they described as a growing trend of violent resistance during immigration enforcement operations.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin linked the incident to recent public messaging from sanctuary city leaders, claiming that webinars and online resources have encouraged undocumented individuals to defy ICE agents.
“This is the second incident in a week where an officer was injured while arresting an illegal alien,” McLaughlin said.
The violence against our brave ICE law enforcement must come to an end. It is time to tone down the rhetoric”.
DHS continues to investigate the incident and has reiterated its call for cooperation from local jurisdictions in enforcing federal immigration law.
