A crash at a busy intersection turned deadly Tuesday after investigators say an SUV made an illegal left turn on red, critically injuring its passenger, who later died from her injuries.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, at 9:31 a.m. on Tuesday, a Lincoln SUV was traveling eastbound on Okeechobee Blvd. in the outside left turn lane when another driver in a Jeep was traveling westbound on Okeechobee Blvd., approaching the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike.
The SUV made a left turn on red and drove into the path of the Jeep, which impacted the passenger side of the SUV, where 42-year-old Ingrid Calderon Reano was sitting, causing both vehicles to spin out and eventually stop on the pedestrian island on the northwest corner of the intersection, according to the crash report.
The crash closed all lanes on Tuesday morning for several hours, per previous reports.
Deputies say all three occupants were transported to the hospital, with both the driver and passenger in the SUV in critical condition, and the driver of the Jeep sustaining minor injuries.
The passenger of the Jeep, Calderon Reano, succumbed to her injuries at 12:34 p.m. on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, according to deputies.
