OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – Officials with Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said one person is dead after they responded to a devastating house fire in Dunnellon Tuesday morning.
They said that around 12:51 a.m. Tuesday, MCFR units were called to the 20600 block of West McKinney Avenue to a home engulfed in flames.
Two people were able to escape, MCFR officials said, but one was trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived on scene at 12:55 a.m., they said, to find the house 75% in flames.
By 1:18 a.m., MCFR said the fire was under control.
One individual was found dead inside the home.
State Fire Marshal officials are investigating the cause and origin of the fire, MCFR officials said.
Some neighbors who spoke with TV20 said they knew the man who died- one family member identified him as his “Uncle Chris”.
One neighbor said he saw the victim, Chris Jones, just yesterday, but he didn’t know it would be the last time.
“Upon my return here at the house, Chris had his brother, we called him Hoss, in the wheelchair going by,” said Freddie Oats III, a neighbor. “I was teasing them about exercising and we laughed about it and they continued on their walk and I told them hey I’ll see you guys later. Then this morning I’m just surprised that this would have taken place.”
Oats III said the Salvation Army has reached out to help.
TV20 has confirmed there were originally 3 people living in the home.
