JSO: Man hospitalized after being shot in leg in Northwest Jacksonville

A man was hospitalized Wednesday night after being shot in the leg in Northwest Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after the shooting occurred at 7:30 p.m., JSO says officers responded to a local hospital in reference to the man identified as 34-year-old Leon Mahoney, being shot.

When officers arrived, “the victim stated he was walking near the intersection on Cleveland Road and 45th St. W. when he heard [an] unknown group of people arguing,” JSO said in a statement.

“The victim stated a short time later he heard a single gunshot and realized he was shot in the leg,” the statement reads. “The victim then walked back to his nearby residence where a family member transported him to a local area hospital.”

The sheriff’s office says at this time, Mahoney is unable to provide a suspect description of the person who shot at him; he is currently stable.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. If you wish to provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
