A man was shot and killed Monday night during an encounter with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, police said.
Police said they were called to investigate a carjacking on Eaverson Street around 8:40 p.m. Monday in the Durkeeville area.
An older woman called 911 after her car had been stolen. Her family was nearby waiting with her when police arrived.
According to JSO, while officers were interviewing the family involved, a man who had nothing to do with the carjacking started harassing that woman and her family.
He approached them, pulled out a knife and made stabbing motions toward the family.
JSO said that’s when two officers saw the man with the weapon and fired at him, hitting him multiple times. He died at the scene.
After the shooting, investigators found the man had dropped a butter knife.
No officers were injured in the encounter.
This is the sixth shooting involving JSO officers this year.
The State Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident.
