JSO officer fatally shoots man in head after arrest turns physical in Oceanway

JSO officer fatally shoots man in head after arrest turns physical in Oceanway

A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer fatally shot a man Monday in the Oceanway neighborhood during a physical confrontation that broke out while making an arrest.

According to JSO Chief Parker, around 6:30 p.m., task force officers were looking for WL, who had a warrant out for a stolen car and was suspected of burglaries.

After about an hour, officers noticed Lowe peaking outside as a car was pulling up to the home on Ponce Boulevard near New Berlin Road. L exited the home and got into the vehicle, prompting the officers to approach them.

One officer took L into custody as another officer, identified as Zackery Jennings, approached the driver, JSO said.

As Jennings attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, JSO said, the driver, who had not been identified at the time of the briefing, resisted orders and began aggressively fighting Jennings.

JSO said that during the fight, the driver pulled out a gun, causing Jennings to shoot him in the head.

The man died on the scene.

Jennings has worked with the sheriff’s office for eight years, and this was his first officer-involved shooting.

This incident also marked the 17th officer-involved shooting of the year.
