A man was arrested on an attempted murder charge Tuesday after Lake Wales police said he took out a knife and stabbed a person in the neck during a drug deal.
Officers with the Lake Wales Police Department responded to the area of Washington Avenue and Jewel Street on Feb. 11 after receiving reports of a noise disturbance.
Once there, officers said they found the victim laying near the intersection with a deep cut to their neck and another stab wound to the torso.
Polk County EMS responded and began life-saving measures. Authorities said the victim underwent intensive care and ultimately is expected to survive.
Further investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect, 49-year-old Jamie Lydell Bibbs of Lake Wales, had been in an argument over $4 used to purchase cocaine, police reported.
Detectives said the argument turned physical after Bibbs struck the victim in the face. The victim then tried to defend themselves, and that’s when investigators believe Bibbs took out a knife.
Police, along with special agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), found Bibbs at a Lake Wales residence on Tuesday and took him into custody.
“Today’s arrest is another great example of the law enforcement partnerships we have in Florida, and our mission to keep our communities safe,” said FDLE Tampa Bay Special Agent in Charge Mark Brutnell. “I am proud of the swift actions FDLE’s agents and Lake Wales Police Department’s investigators’ took in this investigation to get this violent criminal off of our streets.”
