A Lakeland man was killed early Monday morning after he ran a red light and slammed into the side of a semi-truck in Polk County.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said detectives were dispatched at 2:32 a.m. for a crash on New Tampa Highway (US 92) at Clark Road.
Authorities said Miguel Jacinto, 56, of Lakeland, the driver of the gray 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, was driving north on Clark Road at a “high rate of speed” when he failed to stop at a red light and slammed into the passenger side of a semi-truck.
The front of Jacinto’s car had become “wedged under the trailer” in front of the rear axles.
PCSO said the 56-year-old was killed at the scene. The truck driver, a Tifton, Georgia man, was not injured.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. No charges are anticipated to be filed, according to PCSO.
The eastbound lane of New Tampa Highway was closed for about five hours during the initial stage of the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
