A Lakeland man was arrested for DUI after hitting a 3-year-old on a Florida beach over the weekend.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, a 3-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a Jeep on the beach on Saturday.
Deputies responded to the beach near the University Boulevard parking lot around 4:14 p.m.
Witnesses told deputies that a 3-year-old was running across the traffic lanes from the ocean and darted in front of the Jeep, which hit him at a low speed.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital and was later discharged.
According to deputies, the driver, identified as Brock Winkler, 36, of Lakeland, remained on the scene of the crash.
Witnesses also told deputies that Winkler had been drinking before the crash, and a photo showed several empty beer cans left behind where he was parked.
A DUI investigation began, and deputies found probable cause to charge Winkler with DUI with serious bodily injury. Winkler refused to submit to a breath test, which resulted in an additional charge of refusal to submit to DUI testing.
Winkler was taken to Volusia County Jail.
