Lanes reopen on I-4 in Seminole County after military Humvee flips; 3 hospitalized, troopers say

2009 US Army Humvee swerved to avoid collision

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Eastbound Interstate 4 was shut down Wednesday afternoon in Seminole County after a military Humvee flipped, sending three men to the hospital, officials said.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the crash shortly after 3 p.m., records show.

A 2009 U.S. Army Humvee was traveling eastbound in the outside lane near mile marker 96 when its driver attempted to change into the center lane, overcorrecting and swerving right to avoid hitting another vehicle that was already in the center travel lane, according to FHP. While no contact was made between the vehicles, the Humvee overturned into the outside shoulder, troopers said.

Three occupants of the Humvee — a 20-year-old Orlando man driving, a 44-year-old Clermont man in the front-right passenger’s seat and an 18-year-old Orlando man in the rear-right passenger’s seat — were all hospitalized, according to FHP.

The crash is still being investigated.

All eastbound lanes near West Lake Mary Boulevard were shut down as at least one trapped patient was extricated and a fuel leak was also addressed, the Seminole County Fire Department said on social media.

The lanes reopened just before 7 p.m., nearly four hours after the crash.
