Lanes have reopened after being blocked on Interstate 75 North in Marion County, when an overpass was damaged in a collision.
Officials say a semi-truck hauling an excavator hit the Southwest 66th Street overpass on Friday morning.
All northbound lanes have reopened on the interstate since the crash. Southwest 66th Street is not expected to fully reopen on Friday.
A bridge inspector responded to the scene. Drivers say the delays were some of the worst they’ve ever seen.
“That’s the worst traffic over ever seen since coming down here,” said Frank Beaver, a driver. “And I’ve been coming down to Lake Okeechobee fishing since ’74. It’s terrible, I ain’t never took that long to drive a quarter’s distance.”
In February 2023, the same bridge, Southwest 66th Street, was hit by a semi-truck hauling an oversized load. The crash caused the interstate to be shut down for hours, and the bridge was closed for repairs.
In June 2023, a dump truck with an extended bed collided with the same 66th Street bridge.
FDOT records updated this year listed the bridge, built in 1964, as in good condition.
