Leesburg DUI suspect charged in crash that left three people injured.

A Leesburg man remains in jail without bond following his arrest last month on a warrant charging him with injuring three people in a crash.

Kelvin Maurice Williams, 36, was arrested in late February when it was discovered his drunk reckless driving caused the accident and the hospitalization of three others involved in the crash.

On April 20, 2023, a state trooper responded to the scene of a traffic crash at State Road 44 and Morse Boulevard in Wildwood, according to an arrest report from Florida Highway Patrol. Upon arrival, he observed two vehicles with severe damage on the southeast corner of the intersection. He also saw the front axle of the victim’s vehicle laying within the intersection.

Further investigation revealed that Williams was the driver of the first vehicle. Witnesses and testimony stated that he was traveling at a high rate of speed going eastbound on State Road 44 when he did not stop at a steady red light. This caused a catastrophic collision with the victim’s vehicle, the report said.

As a result of the high-speed collision, two of Williams’ passengers were taken to a local trauma center with serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was also transported to a local trauma center with serious injuries. FHP investigators responded to the scene for measurements and photographs, the report said.

After reviewing Williams’ license, the state trooper learned it was revoked in 2022 for racing on public highways. It was also discovered through a medical record search that his blood alcohol content was .093 just after the crash happened when he was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital for treatment, the report said.

Williams was ultimately brought in on the afternoon of Feb. 28 on warrant for the charges of DUI with serious bodily injury, reckless driving with serious bodily injury and operating a motor vehicle while license suspended or revoked (causing serious bodily injury). He was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center to be held without bond.
