Leesburg man facing DUI charge after crash at busy shopping plaza

A Leesburg man was arrested for drunk driving after his involvement in a vehicle accident at Palm Plaza.

An officer responded to Palm Plaza, located at 717 N. 14th St., regarding a vehicle accident around 6 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. He met with 79-year-old PAR to ask what happened and ensure he did not need EMS.

Throughout questioning, R had extremely dilated pupils and glassy eyes. He swayed on his feet and frequently asked the officer to repeat himself. Due to the possibility of impairment, the officer asked him if he would be willing to do field sobriety exercises, and he agreed, the report said.

R’ performance, which included swaying and not following instructions, led the officer to conclude he was under the influence. The report noted he made multiple statements indicating he was “drunk” and “the beers were getting to him” throughout the exercises. He was read his rights but refused to speak with law enforcement, as well.

R later submitted breath tests resulting in 0.068g/210L and 0.065g/210L, the report said.

The Illinois native was arrested on charge of DUI and transported to Lake County Jail. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
