‘Left him laying there’: Mom seeks justice after son killed in Pompano Beach hit-and-run

Authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Pompano Beach early Sunday, while the victim’s mother is hoping the driver responsible comes forward.

Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said they received a call shortly after 4 a.m. about a person lying in the roadway near the 1700 block of North Dixie Highway, near Northeast 17th Court.

Deputies and fire rescue crews responded and found an injured person who’d been hit by a vehicle. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s mother identified him later Sunday as 43-year-old Don Larkin.

“Detectives knocked on my door and gave me the bad news that my son had gotten hit on Dixie Highway,” Annie Larkin said. “He was a pretty good person, nice. He did no harm to nobody, he just wanted to do what he wanted to do.”

Footage showed homicide detectives taking pictures and putting down evidence markers near what looked like pieces of a vehicle.

“They left him laying there like that, didn’t stop to see what had happened,” Annie Larkin said. “It’s rough, all I can say.”

Authorities confirmed they’re searching for the driver of what’s believed to be a 2008-2013 silver Nissan Rogue, and released images of the car parts found at the scene.

His mother said they’re mourning the unexpected loss and will have to break the news to his five children. She also said she wants the driver to take responsibility.

“Let someone know that you were the one who did it, and you didn’t mean to do it or something like that and everything will be okay,” she said.

The circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run are being investigated. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Broward Crimes Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
