Machete-wielding Florida man loses 6-minute fight with police, officer’s gun fired

A violent confrontation with a machete-wielding South Florida man ended with an officer’s gun going off at a condominium complex in Highland Beach.

The Highland Beach Police Department (HBPD) said on Thursday evening officers responded to a fight at the Toscana Development at 3740 S. Ocean Boulevard. Police were advised that there was a possible stabbing, and someone had been cut in the face.

Upon arrival, officers were met by the condo’s security officer, who expressed concern about the escalating situation. Inside, they encountered 24-year-old PO D Jr., who was seated behind the concierge desk. D stood up and allegedly approached the officer with a large machete, police said.

The officer commanded D to stop, but the suspect allegedly raised the machete in an attempt to strike him. The officer deployed his taser, causing D to drop to the ground. Despite repeated commands, police said D resisted arrest, leading to a violent struggle during which he attempted to unholster the officer’s firearm, discharging a round through the holster, police said.

Other HBPD officers assisted in subduing D, who continued to resist and attempted to grab at another officer’s gun, authorities said. The struggle lasted approximately six minutes before D was finally handcuffed.

Prior to the officers’ arrival, D allegedly confronted a valet with the machete. The valet said D grabbed him by the throat and sliced the victim’s lips while holding him against the wall.

Once D was successfully apprehended, he was taken to Delray Medical Center for treatment, then booked into the Palm Beach County Jail for aggravated battery, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, depriving an officer of means of protection, and resisting an officer with violence.
