Man, 18, arrested after shooting co-worker in Miami Gardens, police say

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – An 18-year-old man could be spending a long time behind bars after police say he shot his co-worker multiple times in Miami Gardens over two months ago.

Miami Gardens police said they responded to reports of a shooting around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15 near the 3800 block of Northwest 183rd Street.

Upon arrival, police found Alberto Luis Ortega lying on the ground next to a 2009 White Honda Civic, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to an arrest affidavit.

Miami Dade Fire Rescue airlifted Ortega to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Weeks after the shooting, detectives said they interviewed Ortega on Feb. 5, where they learned that he was employed by Enlighten Ventures as a charity salesperson, and had him recount his workday with Shamar Glamy Louis, 18, of Margate, on the day the incident occurred.

Police said Ortega and Louis were paired to work in a group for Kirkland’s, located at 8571 SW 24th St., in Miami.

However, after being asked to leave by Kirkland’s staff because they did not have prior consent or authorization to set up in front of the establishment, police said both men ended their workday and Ortega planned to meet a friend while Louis waited in his car.

Subsequently, Ortega agreed to drop Louis off at Douglas Pointe apartment complex in Margate.

During the ride, police said Louis masked his face and requested to be dropped off at a desolate alley between a water plant and the apartment complex.

As Ortega texted his friend upon arrival, he heard gunshots and felt immediate pain in his arm and attempted to flee the scene but lost mobility in his legs at which time Louis asked him, “What are you gonna do now n—-?!” the report stated.

A search warrant of Louis’ vehicle yielded his fingerprints, corroborating the victim’s testimony. Police said Ortega also positively identified Louis from a photo.

Police said cellphone records placed both parties at the incident location during the shooting.

Jail records show Louis is facing one count of first-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

As of Tuesday, he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

A motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time.
