A 57-year-old man died in a two-car crash early Sunday in Delray Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
At 3:40 a.m., the Delray Beach Fire Department responded to the crash at South Military Road and Las Verdes Circle, Ted White told WPTV. PBSO responded though the crash was just inside the city.
A 2013 red Rav 4 Toyota driven by German Ribon Barreto of West Palm Beach was going northbound on Military Trail approaching Las Verdes Drive in the center lane, according to a PBSO crash report.
A 2013 Mercedes C250, driven by a 21-year-old West Palm Beach man, also was going northbound on Military Trail and was closing in on the Toyota from behind.
For unknown reasons, the Mercedes driver failed to fully steer away from the Toyota, causing the front right of the Mercedes to impact the left rear of the Toyota, PBSO said.
As the Toyota was struck, it violently rotated northeast off the roadway, hitting a telephone pole at the intersection.
The Mercedes continued northeast for a short time before veering east off the roadway, mounting the curb, traversing the sidewalk and rolling to rest in a grassy area.
Barreta was pronounced deceased on scene by fire rescue and the Mercedes driver sustained minor injuries.
The entrance to Emmanuel Catholic Church was blocked.
