Man, 84, accused of fatally striking victim in wheelchair in Hialeah, fleeing scene

An 84-year-old man was arrested Friday after he struck someone in a wheelchair with his vehicle in Hialeah and then fled the scene, leaving the victim to die, authorities said.

According to an arrest report from the Hialeah Police Department, the hit-and-run was reported at about 10:45 a.m. Friday in the area of Palm Avenue and West 49th Street.

Police said AH, who lives in Hialeah, was driving his gold Honda Pilot SUV south in the outside lane of Palm Avenue when the victim entered the lane and was struck by the front of H’s vehicle.

According to the report, H continued driving, causing the victim and wheelchair to be pulled underneath the SUV.

H drove over the victim and then fled the scene, authorities said.

According to the report, a witness called 911 and the victim was found unresponsive, but breathing in the roadway when first responders arrived.

Police said the victim had suffered a head injury.

The victim was eventually transported to Hialeah Hospital, where he or she died shortly after arriving.

Police said they located H that same day at his home. His vehicle was found outside the home with blood on the front bumper and a pair of glasses attached to the hood.

H provided a statement to detectives, however that statement was redacted from the publicly released report.

H was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death.

As of Monday morning, H remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
