An Oklahoma man was arrested Saturday after he was accused of DUI following a crash he was involved in on US-41 in Bonita Springs on Friday.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, C, 55, was arrested after deputies responded to a rollover crash on US-41 near West Terry Street, which closed the road
The crash involved two vehicles, a 2026 GMC Yukon and a 2022 Tesla, and there were serious injuries reported.
The driver of the Tesla told deputies he was going north on US-41 in the inside lane behind another vehicle before he saw the GMC Yukon behind him and believed the driver was tailgating him. The report stated the driver said he moved forward to allow the GMC Yukon to pass in the center lane. The GMC Yukon then reportedly abruptly swerved to the left and hit the Tesla, which caused both vehicles to lose control.
A witness reported to deputies that the Tesla was close behind her as the GMC Yukon appeared to be going fast before abruptly changing lanes and hitting the Tesla.
Another witness in the parking lot of a restaurant saw the three vehicles and reported that the GMC Yukon appeared to be merging when it hit the Tesla.
The driver of the Tesla was taken to the hospital due to injuries from the crash.
Deputies said they determined the GMC Yukon entered the Tesla’s lane and hit it near the right rear corner panel before both vehicles lost control in the crash, according to the report.
The GMC Yukon overturned and left the road before sliding, going airborne and hitting a berm. Then the vehicle went airborne again and hit a power pole before resting after damaging shrubs. The Tesla left the road and hit a tree, knocking it down in the process, the report notes.
A passenger in the GMC Yukon identified C as the driver at the time of the crash, and she told deputies they met where she worked as a server. She also met another person, and the three had been at the establishment for about four to five hours.
After she finished work, she said the group went somewhere else and alcoholic beverages were reportedly consumed. According to the report, she told deputies they were going to get her vehicle when the crash happened.
According to the report, C was also in the hospital, where medical staff said his BAC was reportedly 0.254.
One of the passengers told deputies she remembered the driver was C. A man in the vehicle reportedly told deputies he was the driver and that a vehicle hit them from behind, according to the report.
The sheriff’s office said witnesses identified another person as the driver, C, and the man said nothing else.
Deputies made contact with C, where they accused him of smelling of alcohol, having bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, according to the report.
C reportedly did not provide a blood sample or a breath sample.
C was arrested, but he has since bonded out and is facing multiple DUI-related charges.
