Man accused of firing shots at three golfers near FAU Jupiter campus

Man accused of firing shots at three golfers near FAU Jupiter campus

Shots were fired at a golf course in Jupiter, causing three golfers to take cover on Tuesday.

According to the Jupiter Police Department (JPD), at around 6:05 p.m. it received reports of shots being fired at the Abacoa Golf Course near Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Jupiter campus.

JPD said the three golfers reported the man was out back on the patio of his home, shooting at them. Police say the man fired around 6 to 10 rounds.

Police asked residents and visitors to avoid the area while the officers conduct their investigation. The call of shots being fired also caused Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to send out an alert to its Jupiter campus, notifying them that there was an active threat near campus. Since then, the campus has notified its community, notifying them there is no threat to the campus.

While police investigated, they noticed the house from which the shots could have come. It prompted the SWAT team and crisis negotiators to surround the house and make contact with the people inside the home.

Patrick O’Donnell said he was at a nearby park when he heard the gunfire.

“We saw officers draw their weapons, automated weapons and some guys had riot shields, and the dogs were out trying to get the bad guy,” O’Donnell said. “So it was definitely something you don’t see everyday especially in Abacoa.”

Jupiter Police Chief Michael Barbera said the people inside the home surrendered peacefully, leading to officers arresting the shooter, who was identified as a man in his late 20’s or early 30’s.

“We realized what house those shots probably came from,” Barbera said. “We set up on that house. The SWAT team and crisis negotiators eventually made contact with a couple in the house. They were called out and surrendered peacefully.

As of this writing, there were no reports of injuries.

Jupiter Police were on scene investigating with assistance from the FAU and the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

Police say at this time they are not releasing the suspect’s name.
