Police arrested a man who they said is accused of slashing another man on South Beach late last year.
Officers with the Miami Beach Police Department said the victim was taking a walk on the beach near the 1700 block of Collins Avenue when he sat near a closed lifeguard tower. He was then approached by 24-year-old JDG, who asked for a cigarette.
When the victim replied that he did not smoke, G asked if he could borrow his cellphone, to which the victim said he does not let people use his phone.
The victim initially thought G had walked away, but he told police that G attacked him from his left side while holding a knife or bladed weapon and pushed him to the ground, according to the report.
The report stated that the victim told police that he attempted to fight G and tried to push him away but felt a “puncture to his neck.” He said G then jumped off him and fled northbound.
Police said the victim “felt a heavy volume of blood pouring from his neck” as he attempted to apply pressure to the wound.
He then called 911, and officers who arrived at the scene noticed that the victim had a cut on his neck extending from ear to ear.
Miami Beach police issued a “be-on-the-lookout” alert and arrested G around 4 p.m. Thursday. The victim identified him in a photo lineup.
Detectives said that a records search revealed G was on probation at the time of the attack for an unrelated weapons charge.
Jail records show he is facing one count of aggravated battery with a weapon causing great bodily harm.
A motive for the attack is unclear at this time.
As of Friday, he was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
