Man beaten to death with tire iron in Brevard County, police say

The Cocoa Police Department said one person has been taken into custody in connection with a homicide that occurred Sunday morning in the city.

According to Cocoa police, officers were called out to an affordable housing complex called Cocoa Lofts at 900 Friday Road just after 11 a.m. Sunday, for a 911 call reporting that someone was being attacked. The victim, a man, was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His identity has not yet been released by Cocoa Police, nor has the name and identity of the suspect, but neighbors identified both of them to WESH 2 Sunday afternoon.

The suspect, who police said is known to the victim, has been taken into custody. Police have not said what charges he is facing.

Neighbors said the victim, who WESH 2 is not identifying until next of kin notifications have been confirmed, was living with the suspect and the suspect’s girlfriend.

The girlfriend and other residents said the suspect was in psychosis when he attacked the victim.

One neighbor said he has schizophrenia, and had been off his medications.

“I’ve never seen so much blood,” said neighbor BW.

“There was a lot going on at one time, and he just, he wasn’t going to stop, like, we had to physically pin him down.”

W and others said the suspect beat the victim using a variety of tools including a screwdriver, hammer and, eventually, a tire iron.

“There’s so many things that can be done if people could just realize the symptoms and signs that something might transpire,” W said. “Don’t ignore them, don’t think things are going to be okay, don’t take things lightly like that.”
