Man charged after fleeing fatal motorcycle crash in Keysville

A man is facing charges after deputies say he fled the scene of a fatal crash in Keysville.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 7:45 p.m. April 11 on Old Hopewell Road near Henry George Road.

When deputies arrived, they found two people who had been ejected from a motorcycle. Giovany Negron Talavera, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An adult female passenger was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Deputies said she is in critical condition.

Investigators said Edwin Rapalo-Lorenzo, 27, was driving a Ford Explorer east on Old Hopewell Road when he crossed into the westbound lane and hit the motorcycle head-on. Then, deputies say, he ran.

Aviation and K9 units joined the search. Rapalo-Lorenzo was later found, taken into custody and transported to Tampa General Hospital for injuries, according to HCSO.

He faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and no valid driver license.

“This crash took a life and left another person fighting for theirs, and the driver chose to run instead of take responsibility,” Chad Chronister said. “Our hearts are with the victims and their family as they face this loss, and we will ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

HCSO said an immigration detainer will be placed on Rapalo-Lorenzo.

The investigation remains active.
