Man charged with manslaughter in shooting death of 16-year-old girl in New Town

A 27-year-old man was arrested and accused of manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl in New Town on Friday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they responded to a home on West 2nd Street around 11:20 a.m.

When officers arrived, there were several people inside the house, including Layla D. Johnson, 16, who had been shot, according to police.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

Police initially detained four people to conduct interviews.

Based on evidence and the interviews, police quickly identified Damon Otto Wilson, 27, as the suspect.

Wilson is being charged with manslaughter.

Multiple law enforcement sources told News4JAX the shooting was believed to be accidental.
