Man dies after being shot multiple times at apartment complex; Westside High on lockout ‘out of abundance of caution’

A man was killed in a shooting Thursday morning at an apartment complex right across from Westside High School, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to a spokesperson with Duval County Public Schools, Westside High School was put on a lockout “out of an abundance of caution,” adding that the shooting was unrelated to the school.

“All students and staff are safe,” the spokesperson said.

Around 7:45 a.m., JSO officers responded to an apartment complex on Firestone Road after receiving reports of a person shot. When they arrived, they found a man in his 30s shot to death.

Police said the man was shot “multiple times.”

According to JSO, witnesses stated they heard the gunshots, and when they stopped hearing the gunfire, they saw multiple men running from the apartment.

“The victim was staying inside one of the apartments, and this is where he was shot, actually, inside one of the apartments,” JSO Sgt. SR said.

JSO said several people were detained, and the school board police were working with them in the investigation.

“They were able to help try to detain some of the people in the area who heard gunfire, and investigators are currently speaking with them,” R said.

Police would not confirm if any of the people detained were students.

Anyone with information or surveillance video is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500, email jsocrimetips@jaxsheriff.org or remain anonymous and call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
