Man dies after couple attacked in Ormond Beach, police say

B, who was attacked last week in Ormond Beach along with his wife by a man who police say later shot an officer in a hospital, has died, officials said Wednesday.

B, 79, and his wife, 74-year-old N , were allegedly attacked by 40-year-old H after the elderly couple responded to a burglary alarm Sunday night at Daytona College, according to the Ormond Beach Police Department.

Police said the couple found a suspicious vehicle and items inside the building that did not belong there. While they were outside contacting dispatch, H exited the building, according to police.

While on the phone with dispatchers, N told police that a man had left the building and gotten into his vehicle, officials said.

“He is backing up in the parking lot, and now he is leaving,” she said.

H then struck N with a vehicle before getting out and repeatedly striking and kicking both victims, police said. The couple was hospitalized in critical condition.

H, of Daytona Beach, was taken to the hospital after the attack, police said. Hospital staff later asked to move his handcuffs to the front of his body so he could undergo a CT scan, and when one handcuff was removed, documents state H struggled with an officer, grabbed the officer’s gun, and shot him in the leg.

The hospital response drew criticism from Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young, who said delays in medically clearing H prevented officers from taking him to jail sooner.

“(This) coordination did not occur as it should have. Officers were actively attempting to control an extremely combative individual while waiting for the physician,” Young’s statement reads, in part.

AdventHealth soon replied, providing the following statement:

“The safety of our patients, visitors and team members is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for AdventHealth. “We regularly provide training and resources to our teams, including on-site drills, to help us respond quickly and appropriately when emergency situations arise. We are grateful for the swift actions of our clinical teams and law enforcement, and our hearts are with everyone affected by this incident. We are supporting local authorities as the investigation continues, and all media inquiries should be directed to law enforcement.”

A judge has since decided to keep H in custody without bond.

M — the owner of Manny’s Pizza House near Daytona College, the school B and his wife N owned — shared his grief over B’s passing.

M said he first met B and N more than 20 years ago when they came into his restaurant to eat.

“We became to be friends and family with them,” he said.

M explained that N and B were regulars at the restaurant, often visiting a few times a week.

“Not seeing them it’s like an empty part of us and we just found out a few minutes ago that B had passed. My condolences go out to the family. It’s just hard to word,” he said.
