Man dies after reported drowning incident in Daytona Beach

Update: The man has since been identified by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office as 58-year-old B.

A 60-year-old man was pronounced dead Friday after being brought back to shore in a reported drowning incident at The Hartford Approach in Daytona Beach, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

Beach Safety responded around 1 p.m., locating the man being held afloat by a kayak operator who had paddled over to help, a statement reads.

The man, described as being from Daytona Beach, was found unresponsive in the ocean 80 to 100 meters from the shore, according to the statement. He was brought to shore and lifeguards immediately began performing life-saving measures before he was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the statement reads.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office will handle the investigation, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said on social media that almost 200 people had already been rescued from the water on Friday as of around 9 p.m.
