Man dies in crash caused by driver trying to pass another car

A man died at the scene of crash caused by another driver who was trying to pass another car.

The 42-year-old Palm Harbor man was driving a Volkswagen sedan at 8:25 a.m. Thursday southbound on State Road 471 near Tarrytown in Sumter County when he crashed nearly head-on with a Nissan Rogue driven by a 32-year-old Lakeland man who had been traveling northbound on State Road 471, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Lakeland man had been trying to pass another vehicle when he entered the southbound lane. The vehicles collided and the Palm Harbor man was declared dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash shut down traffic on the roadway for most of the morning.
