Man in custody after Lee County deputies fire shot during welfare check that escalated

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a welfare check escalated to a deputy firing a shot after encountering an armed person at the Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Friday night.

Deputies responded to a home off Bobcat Drive at 1 a.m., and they say they encountered a verbally aggressive man armed with a gun.

The sheriff’s office says the man pointed a gun at deputies, and one round was shot by a deputy.

No one was injured.

Deputies say they were able to subdue the man using a less-than-lethal round before taking him into custody.
