A Daytona Beach man was arrested for battery after kicking a fellow patient in the shins at LifeStream Behavioral Center.
An officer was dispatched to LifeStream Behavioral Center, located at 2020 Tally Rd., regarding a battery around 11:20 a.m. Saturday, March 1, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. Facility staff reported that a patient, 34-year-old RAH, battered another patient. At the time of the report, H was being treated at UF Health Leesburg Hospital, located at 600 E Dixie Ave., for chest pain as a result of being sedated just after the battery incident.
Upon arrival, the officer met with the victim who stated H had been constantly harassing him since he was admitted on Thursday, Feb. 20. The harassment was mostly verbal, including threats and abusive language. However, prior to the battery incident, H “swung” at the victim unprovoked. He missed, and the staff were able to restrain him and separate the patients, the report said.
At about 9:45 a.m., the victim and other patients were sitting and watching TV in the common day area of the male unit. H was pacing the room when he randomly and without provocation kicked the victim on the left shin multiple times. The victim pushed and kicked back in self-defense, but he had his hands inside his shirt, the report said.
The facility staff saw the disturbance and intervened. H ran down the hall and then was restrained by the staff. The victim did not sustain any visible marks, the report said.
The officer next spoke to a witness, a nurse who was in the male unit of the facility at the time of the incident. She stated there had been ongoing issues with H harassing and being aggressive with other patients. She explained that he seemed fixated on the victim for no apparent reason, and he tried to punch him earlier that day, the report said.
While seated at her desk across from the common area, the witness saw H pacing the room as the victim watched TV. Without confrontation or provocation, he became irate and deliberately kicked the victim two or three times in the left leg. Facility staff immediately separated them, and H tried to run away from them, the report said.
H was only diagnosed with major-depressive disorder, but due to his aggressive behavior, he was put on anti-psychotic medications. He had to be regularly sedated, the report said.
During the investigation, multiple staff members commented on Hill’s aggression he had shown since his arrival and his fixation on the victim. The officer was also able to speak to Hill while he was at UF Health. He was slightly incoherent during the interview, the report said.
The officer asked H what happened earlier at LifeStream with the victim, to which he advised that he kicked the victim because he was talking badly about him. He would not elaborate further and resorted to calling the victim derogatory names. He also later made spontaneous utterances such as “it was a misunderstanding,” the report said.
An inquiry of H’s criminal history with dispatch revealed he had one prior conviction for battery. The 2022 conviction was in Ottawa County, Michigan, for domestic violence, the report said.
H was placed under a police hold with LifeStream for when he was discharged, and he was later arrested Wednesday for simple battery (one prior conviction). He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $5,000.
