Man killed after running across U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs, being hit by 2 cars: police

A man was killed Tuesday night after Tarpon Springs police said he ran across U.S. 19 and was hit by two cars.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 19 and Tarpon Avenue, according to the Tarpon Springs Police Department.

Officers responded to the area after receiving reports of a vehicle accident and said they found Brandon Posey, 41, of New Port Richey, dead in the northbound lanes of U.S. 19.

Investigators said they learned that Posey had gotten out of a vehicle that was parked in the southbound lanes of U.S. 19 and ran east across the highway.

“It does not appear that he was in the crosswalk and northbound U.S. 19 had a green light,” a news release from the police department said.

A black BMW that was traveling north on the highway hit Posey and knocked him to the ground, police said. A grey Ford SUV then ran Posey over, according to investigators.

Detectives said both drivers stopped and are cooperating with the investigation. Police do not believe impairment was a factor.

Traffic from Tarpon Avenue was being diverted while police investigated Tuesday night. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash or who may have captured it on dashcam is asked to contact Lead Traffic Homicide Investigator L. Palmer at 727-938-2849.
