A man was rushed to the hospital after a security guard stabbed him at a McDonald’s in Fort Lauderdale, police said.
Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the restaurant located at Broward Boulevard and Northwest First Street, at around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, following a fight that escalated into a stabbing.
“Respond to a stabbing at West Broward Boulevard and NW First Avenue,” said a dispatcher over Broadcastify police scanner. “Caller advising someone was stabbed.”
According to officials, the security guard stabbed the man in the shoulder during the altercation.
The man was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Officials said there was an argument inside or near the McDonald’s when things escalated, at which point someone took out a knife, and the security guard stabbed the man.
Witnesses detailed what they saw.
“The cops were taking a picture of a knife on the floor. ” said one man. “He was stabbed in the shoulder or something, and they was covering it and walking him to the ambulance.”
“At first it started outside then escalated quickly, escalated real quickly,” said another man. “All I heard was a lot of yelling, so it was just crazy.”
Another witness told 7News off camera that the incident was over an argument about smoking inside the restaurant.
Others said they weren’t surprised at what took place since the restaurant is located in a rough part of town.
“Oh, my God. This is the Wild West. Are you kidding me? A woman doesn’t want to walk out here after dark,” said a woman.
When asked whether it was a dangerous area, the woman said, “Dangerous is not the freaking word. There’s no control.”
Police briefly detained a subject for questioning, but later let them out of the vehicle without any charges.
By Thursday evening, the restaurant was cleared and open for business.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
