Man sets fire to a Gainesville home, jumps out of window, officers say

Emergency crews responded to an arson and barricaded man at a home in Northwest Gainesville on Tuesday morning.

Gainesville Fire Rescue officials confirm a home on Northwest 16th Avenue, near 30th Terrace was intentionally set on fire.

Authorities blocked 16th Avenue in both directions between 27th and 31st streets. Littlewood Elementary and Westwood Middle schools were temporarily locked down due to their proximity to the incident according to posts on social media.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and rescue a dog trapped inside.

The suspected arsonist was barricaded inside the home. Gainesville Police Department officers say he started a fire inside the house and then jumped out of the second-story window.

Officers detained the man on the ground and took him to receive medical attention.
