Man shot, injured trying to help partner who was being assaulted by ex-boyfriend in Jacksonville Beach, police says

A man was injured after he was shot in the leg while attempting to help his partner who was being assaulted by her ex-boyfriend in Jacksonville Beach Sunday morning, police said.

Officers initially responded to reports of a disturbance on 3rd Avenue South, near 6th Street South, according to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.

That disturbance turned violent when a man battered “subject(s)” in the area of Shetter Avenue, near 8th Street South, police said.

Then, that same man went to a nearby location where he located his ex-girlfriend and began assaulting her, according to police.

Police said the woman’s current partner came to her aid and was then shot in the leg by the suspect.

The suspect then ran away from the area and took the woman with him. He was later found and taken into custody, police said.

The woman’s partner was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said all of the people involved claimed to be unhoused and there is no continued threat to the public.

Police said more details will be provided Monday.
