Sarasota County deputies are conducting a homicide investigation after a man was found shot to death Tuesday morning in Venice.
Officials said the death happened in the area of 3090 South Tamiami Trail between State Road 776 and Jacaranda Boulevard. The victim has been identified as 42-year-old P A. W, and his next of kin has been notified.
The investigation forced commuters to be detoured away from the area during the morning rush hour.
A witness named L A said she was leaving a gas station nearby around 2 a.m. when she said she drove into Court Plaza, saw W on the ground and called 911.
“He was right here lying like this with his eyes open, and when I got out of the truck, he was breathing really shallow,” A told 10 Tampa Bay at the scene.
Detectives said at least one bullet casing was found at the scene. They’re still working to find out what happened and track down any possible leads to a suspect.
