A pedestrian was struck and killed by a semitruck early Thursday near a grocery store in DeLand, according to police.
Around 6 a.m., a white semitruck with a trailer — traveling north on South Spring Garden Avenue, approaching West Howry Avenue — was headed toward the back of the Winn-Dixie at 1050 W. New York Avenue, the DeLand Police Department said in a statement.
Turning into the southwest entrance of the Winn-Dixie’s loading area and traveling eastbound toward the loading docks, the semi’s tractor hit the pedestrian — identified as a man — upon making the turn, the statement reads.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
An investigation is ongoing. No further details had been shared or confirmed at the time of this report.
