ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — A 29-year-old Port St. Lucie man is facing multiple felony charges after Florida Highway Patrol troopers say he walked along the Florida Turnpike with a knife, resisted arrest and attacked a trooper.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report, the incident happened around 10:40 a.m. on March 10 near mile marker 146 on the northbound side of Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County.
Troopers were dispatched after reports of a man walking southbound on the paved shoulder in the northbound lanes. A trooper responding to the scene reported seeing the man walking north on the shoulder and observed a knife in his right hand.
The trooper gave multiple verbal commands for the man to drop the knife and get on the ground. The report states the man initially refused to comply and continued walking. After repeated commands, he eventually dropped the knife but still refused to get on the ground. The trooper then physically took him to the ground to detain him.
As other troopers arrived to assist, the suspect allegedly head-butted one trooper in the right side of the head while being lifted off the ground and escorted to a patrol car. The report also states the suspect spat directly into the trooper’s face and eyes.
After being placed in the patrol vehicle, the man refused to provide identification or give his name and date of birth, according to the report.
He was later identified as Haakeem Malick Brent Price, born Dec. 16, 1996, and booked into the St. Lucie County Jail.
Price faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and obstruction of justice.
The arrest report notes the trooper experienced possible significant exposure to mucus after the suspect spat in his face and eyes.
