A 31-year-old Marion Oaks woman was arrested after she allegedly punched her roommate repeatedly in the face, loosening and damaging her teeth, because the victim had been mopping in the kitchen while the woman was cooking.
On Friday, September 20, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a local residence on SW 61st Circle in reference to a physical altercation involving a woman, identified as Virginia Aponte, and her female roommate, according to the arrest report.
Upon arrival at the incident location, the deputy observed that the victim’s front teeth were “loose and crooked,” she had a laceration on her upper gum line, and a “chunk of skin” was missing from one of her nostrils. The deputy noted in the report that a paramedic advised that the victim’s teeth were “disfigured from blunt force trauma.”
The victim told the deputy that her teeth were straight prior to her roommate, Aponte, punching her in the face.
According to the victim’s statement, she was mopping the floor in the kitchen while Aponte was cooking. An argument ensued when Aponte asked her to stop cleaning the kitchen.
During the verbal altercation, Aponte allegedly pointed a knife at the victim before placing it down on the kitchen counter. Moments later, when the victim’s back was turned, Aponte allegedly “yanked her hair down to the ground” and punched her multiple times in the face.
At one point during the incident, Aponte’s hand entered the victim’s mouth. The victim advised that she bit down with enough force to cause Aponte to bleed, which made Aponte retract her hand from the victim’s mouth, according to the report.
The victim told the deputy that Aponte was wearing a ring, which damaged the victim’s teeth during the physical altercation. After speaking with the deputy, the victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The deputy made contact with Aponte. After being read her Miranda rights, Aponte stated that while she was cooking in the kitchen, the victim “went over (her) feet with the mop,” according to the report.
Aponte allegedly admitted to “yanking the victim’s hair down” during the ensuing argument, but she denied punching the victim. The report stated that Aponte further denied pointing a knife at the victim at any point during the altercation.
During the post-Miranda interview, Aponte stated that the victim bit her hand during the incident, and the victim’s teeth were possibly damaged when she “yanked her hand out.” When asked about the cause of the victim’s other injuries, Aponte told the deputy, “I don’t know,” according to the report.
On Aponte’s left hand, the deputy observed a large ring, along with several bite marks and a small amount of blood.
Aponte was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail, where she is currently being held on a $7,000 bond. She is being charged with felony battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
A court date has been scheduled at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, according to jail records.
