MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A Martin County Sheriff’s deputy is facing charges following a reported altercation with his 15-year-old daughter.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said that Corporal Emmanuel Perez, who lives in Port St. Lucie, is facing two charges, including a felony, after a physical confrontation with his daughter.
“I’m disappointed that we’re having to deal with this,” said Budensiek.
According to Sheriff Budensiek, Perez initially called police this morning, reporting that his daughter was not going to school for the day and attempted to run away.
Officers responded and resolved the situation, and Perez drove his daughter home.
However, another confrontation occurred once they returned home.
“Once back at his house, they had another altercation where police were again called and arrived and Manny and his daughter were involved in an active struggle on the ground. She made accusations that he had battered her by pulling her hair and pulling her jacket and she had some marks on her.”
Budensiek said a neighbor corroborated the girl’s story. Perez was hauled off in cuffs and taken to the St. Lucie County Jail booked on two charges: misdemeanor domestic battery and felony child abuse without physical harm.
The sheriff says Perez has reported issues with his daughter to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
“He had reported her trying to run away and her trying to get into physical altercations with him in the past. This is something that has been going on,” said Budensiek. “He’s in law enforcement, he’s a deputy. He is held to a higher standard, we hold him to a higher standard, and he was just letting us know there were issues on the home front.”
Budensiek tells CBS12 News Perez has been with the Sheriff’s Office since January 2016 and was recently promoted to corporal, helping train new hires.
“We don’t promote people that don’t do a good job, and he’s done a good job here at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office,” said Budensiek.
Corporal Perez has been placed on paid administrative leave while an internal affairs investigation is underway.
“I’m going into this eyes wide open, and whatever the facts are, we’ll go there,” he said.
