Miami-Dade Man Accused of Abusing Daughter for Skipping Church, Sparks Debate on Religion and Violence

A Miami-Dade man faced a judge today after being accused of physically abusing his daughter because she would not go to church; the arrest, which took place in Miami Gardens, has sparked conversations about family violence tied to religious practices. Local10 reported that RS allegedly entered his daughter’s bedroom yesterday, yanked the covers from her bed, punched her in the chest, and struck her with an electrical cord.

According to the arresting deputies’ report, when they arrived on the scene, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was already providing treatment to the victim, who chose not to give a statement at the time the deputies, which included members from a specialized Mental Health Outreach and Victim Empowerment Squad, took photographs of her injuries and DCF workers were also called to the scene and because the incident occurred at home near Miami Gardens, Sanon was arrested at his residence at 10:55 a.m. yesterday, not long before he was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

The mugshot and arrest information of S, R indicated he is a 63-year-old male with a listed height of 5′ 6″, a weight of 175 lbs., brown eyes, mixed hair color, and identified as belonging to the black race. S’s bond was set at $2,500 and he was charged with child abuse with no great bodily harm; the Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge, Zachary James, is slated to preside over the case, as detailed by Mugshot zone.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and have urged anyone with further information regarding this case or others to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477—tips can be provided anonymously and may be crucial in developing a comprehensive understanding of the context and frequency of such abuse instances within the community.
