A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed on Friday, which triggered a massive police response.
According to MDSO, Deputy D. J. 27, was shot while responding to a car crash and was taken to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz spoke on the incident at a news conference and said that Deputy J was “brutally attacked, and he was murdered.”
The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m. near a warehouse as J was responding to a car crash, MDSO said. After J was shot, bystanders called 911, and he was administered first aid before being taken to the hospital.
“He gave his ultimate sacrifice defending us — his life — defending you,” Cordero-Stutz said. “We need to say as a society, we will not accept this. I’m grateful to the men and women who provide safety to our community every single day.”
The shooting triggered a response from the Coral Gables police, Florida Highway Patrol and the FBI.
“I’m praying for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy who was shot this afternoon in the line of duty,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava wrote on X. “Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family and fellow deputies, and all our men and women in uniform who put themselves at risk to protect our community.”
