A Miami man who was detained Wednesday in connection with an FBI investigation was arrested after he struck a detective and a special agent, authorities said.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, MAG-R, 24, who is from Chile but currently is homeless in Miami, was pulled over Wednesday night while driving a BMW X3 in the area of Southwest Seventh Avenue and Sixth Street.
Police said a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Natacha Alejandra Beas Mecias, was also detained in connection with the FBI investigation.
According to the report, G-R initially gave Miami police detectives with the department’s Tactical Robbery Unit, and FBI Violent Crimes Task Force agents a false name.
Police said one task force officer, however, was able to confirm G-R’s true identity.
While a special agent was in the process of transferring G-R from handcuffs to leg restraints with the help of a detective, G-R slipped one of his hands free and tried to escape, the report stated.
Police said he then struck a detective in the face and a special agent in the arm before he was redirected to the ground.
G-R was arrested on charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, escape, resisting an officer with violence, providing a false name after arrest and driving without a valid license.
Details about the FBI investigation were not publicly released and it’s unclear whether G-R is also facing federal charges in connection with that investigation.
While Mecias was also detained at the scene for questioning in connection with the FBI investigation, G-R’s arrest report did not list her as a co-defendant.
As of Thursday, G-R was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He will not be able to post bond as he is also being jailed on an immigration hold.
